Apple may design its own servers to avoid government snooping
We've known for roughly two years the US government has programs devoted to intercepting computer hardware mid-shipment. These programs are used to insert back doors or spyware deep into a system’s firmware before it even arrives at its destination. A new report claims Apple is looking into building its own servers as a way to thwart this type of insertion.

Microsoft wants to know: Would you trade used digital games for in-store credit?
When Microsoft announced the Xbox One, it unveiled a vision of the future in which all games would essentially be digital and could be shared between multiple people via a friends and family account. This vision failed to catch fire with the public for a number of reasons, including Microsoft’s insistence that the console must remain always-on, and the inability to resell games. It’s interesting, therefore, to see a rumor that Microsoft might revisit the concept of a digital market place from an entirely different angle — one based on explicitly allowing gamers to resell their used games, albeit at a pittance of the purchase price.
The cyber security threat – are we protected yet?
AUSTIN, TX – We’re all aware of well-publicized security breaches and cases of cyber terrorism. In 2014 the hack of Sony Pictures brought worldwide attention and nearly brought the studio’s business to its knees, and will cost Sony millions to clean up the mess and the inevitable lawsuits over the privacy breaches. In the U.S., Chinese hackers are suspected of penetrating the government's office of personnel management (OPM) last summer, exposing 4 million Federal employee records, including social security numbers.
Apple unveils 29-armed robot designed to disassemble old iPhones
Apple cranks out millions of iPhones every quarter, but have you ever wondered what happens to all those devices when they reach the end of their lives? Many of them end up in landfills with other mobile devices that have outlived their usefulness, but some will be recycled. Apple recently decided to take iPhone recycling seriously and the result is Liam. No, Liam is not a factory worker or engineer. Liam is a robot with 29 arms built for the purpose of tearing old iPhones down at breakneck speed.
It’s time to hold manufacturers responsible for Android vulnerabilities
At this point, it’s irrefutable: The Android ecosystem, splintered across untold versions and locked into place by disparate and poorly planned third-party hardware, is making you less safe. This week, Israeli security firm North Bit figured out a way (PDF) to use the long-known “Stage fright” vulnerability to attack literally hundreds of millions of phones. Called Metaphor, it could easily parallel an attack already devised by criminal hackers, who are always neck and neck with security researchers.
